Mystery Unlocked…

The moment I saw this cue-art by Shafali- The Mystery Chest– as part of her Creativity Carnival, this little incident sprang to my mind.

It happened when I was eight and always eager to indulge in anything exciting, illusional and most importantly, stupid! So, at one point of time I got obsessed with treasure-hunting and the obsession carried me to the point where I, along with two other friends of mine (Minni and Divya), finally decided to go on a treasure-hunt ourselves. We drew ourselves a map- it was basically a few lines representing all the streets of our locality that we could remember.

Next, each of us got a small stick to dig up the treasure, a rope and a knife. And finally, one evening we set out on our adventure, only to travel to the large waste dumping site at the back of our colony, a few blocks away from my place. ๐Ÿ˜› The place was covered with piles of dry waste- paper, wood, clothes, glass, cardboard and of course, dogs! We chose a small pile and started looking for our secret treasure chest. Soon we lost track of time and didn’t even notice as it started getting dark. Suddenly, I stepped on a broken piece of glass and hurt my right foot, it started bleeding. Usually, that would have crapped us out, but on that particular day I don’t know what had gotten into us, we tied a handkerchief, that one of my friends had, around the cut and continued our quest.

By this time our parents had started looking for us, but who would have guessed that we were to be found amongst those piles of garbage! My mother happened to cross that road and spotted the three of us digging around in piles of waste, and my God was she angry! The only thing that kept me from getting slapped then and there was the blood slowly oozing out from the handkerchief tied around my foot. We were grounded for weeks after this, and finally when we were allowed to go out and play, the only place we could go was the playground right in front of our homes. ๐Ÿ˜€

Today, when I remember stuff like this from my childhood days, I can, but, laugh. On the other hand, I feel the days I spent out playing and doing silly things as these are at least better than what kids do now- PS, XBOX, TV, Mobile Phones, and the lot.

  1. Hallo ๐Ÿ™‚ your fantastic tale of adventure made me smile for being quite an unexpected take on the prompt. Also for remembering myself being eight and ignoring parental instruction of not to go off exploring (though never ending up in a waste dump)… have a great weekend ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. A beautiful rendition of a sweet memory. Odd that when we grow up, we forget the pain of our injuries and remember the warmth being pampered instead. A great take on my chest of mysteries ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed reading it! And as for the pampering part, I remember actually trying to get hurt intentionally, just to lie on the bed and order everyone around, all day long! ๐Ÿ˜€
